My name is Heather, and I'm asking for help for the person I love most in this world: my 8-year-old son, Kairo.

Kairo is nonverbal and has severe, high-support-needs autism. He needs care around the clock, every hour of every day, and because specialized childcare for a child like him simply doesn't exist, I stepped away from my job a couple of years ago to become his full-time caregiver. It's just the two of us. I wouldn't trade being his mom for anything, but doing this completely on my own has become financially overwhelming. Some days I don't know how we're going to afford the absolute basics — groceries, clothes, and the transportation it takes to get him to the therapies and appointments he depends on every single day. His routine is his lifeline. Keeping his world safe and consistent is what keeps him safe. And then, I got the news no parent ever wants to hear: we have to find another place to live. I am devastated. With no steady income and absolutely no options for childcare, I have exhausted every door I know how to knock on — I've applied for every loan and grant I could possibly find, and I am now in my seventh year on the housing waiting list with nothing opening up for us. That's why I've raised my goal: so that anything donated can go toward putting a roof over my son's head, alongside the food, clothing, and travel expenses his daily life requires. We are more in need now than we have ever been.
